日本でもマスメディアのレベルダウンは目を覆うばかりです。ぼくは日本とアメリカは同じ流れの中をほぼ併走して進んでいると見ていますので、日本のメディア腐敗は、アメリカのそれと同じ理由によると考えているのですが、果たしてかつて良かったものが何らかの理由でおかしくなったのか、もともとおかしかったものが受け手の目が肥えて露見したのか、どちらなのかは判断しかねます。
９０年代以前のマスメディアは健全だったのか？当時のぼくはまだ若すぎて、はっきりと記憶にありません。しかし、ぼく自身９０年代に入るとともにテレビ業界に入り、今はもう定年した大先輩たちに聞いた話しからすれば、とても健全とは呼べない、ハチャメチャな世界だったようです。
警視庁番の記者がべろんべろんに酔っぱらって車を運転し、国会の近くで生け垣に突っ込んで警備の警官たちが飛び出してきて大騒ぎ。でも記者証を見せると敬礼して見逃してくれた・・・例えばそんな、今なら大問題になりかねないことが一昔前は平気で行われていました。そのくせ当時から他人には厳しく、政治家や社会の悪はこれでもかというほど叩いていたのですから、とんでもない奴らです。ただし、今と決定的に違うことがありました。
それは、自分で自分のことをとんでもない奴らだと認識していたことです。
ぼくが初めてお世話になったプロデューサーは、「テレビなんてヤクザな商売だ」と事あるごとに言っていました。決してうそぶいていたのではなく、テレビマンをエリートのように言う人の考えが全く理解できないようでした。良くも悪くも職人気質で、きれい事になど耳を貸さず、これだと思ったら自分の責任でとことん突き進む。その年代の人たちはたいていそんな風でした。
考えてみれば、１９９０年にプロデューサーをやっていたような人たちは、６０年代にテレビ業界に入ったわけで、その頃のテレビなんて娯楽でこそあれ、社会の規範であることなど誰からも期待されていなかったわけです。
でもある時から、テレビは自らを聖職者だと思うようになった。大衆に進むべき方向を指し示す社会的エリートだと認識するようになった気がします。でなければ、ライブドアに買収されそうになったフジテレビ社長の、テレビは崇高な職業だと言わんばかりの発言が出てくるはずはありません。
一昔前にテレビマンに最も要求されたことは「腕を磨いてプロとして恥ずかしくない仕事をしろ」でした。今若いテレビマンに真っ先に叩き込まれるのは「テレビマンとしての自覚と責任を持て」ということです。
昔と今と、どちらがいいのかぼくにはわかりません。ただぼくは、新聞にしろテレビにしろ、ジャーナリズムなどというものは、どこまで行っても所詮はヤクザな商売に過ぎないように思えるのです。文化の担い手でも社会の羅針盤でもなく、あーだこーだと時にはお下劣な話題をまき散らし、社会をかきまわす活性剤のようなものでしかないように思うのです。
マスメディアに倫理を問うべきでないと言いたいのではありません。今のマスメディアは、その影響力からしてどううそぶいてもエリートですし、古き良きヤクザなジャーナリズムには戻れません。エリートである大マスコミの一員がヤクザのように振る舞えば、どれだけ醜悪なことになるかは、ＪＲ西日本の会見で大暴れしたヤクザ記者を見れば明らかです。
ただ、エリートはジャーナリストにはなれないし、ジャーナリストはエリートになってはいけない。エリートによるジャーナリズムは、ジャーナリズムとは似て非なるものだ。そんな気がするのです。
本当は、oribeさん、高給取りのエリートに見えない世界の方が圧倒的に大きいのだ、という後ろめたさぐらいは感じさせる表情をしてもらいたのですけれどね。
